Buehrle shut down after killing bear
The deal was if Mark Buehrle got his bear, he was out of the starting rotation for the rest of the season.
Saturday night, the White Sox left-hander kept up his end of the bargain.
Buehrle went bear hunting in northern Minnesota with teammates Jim Thome, Jermaine Dye and A.J. Pierzynski and killed a 200-pound black bear with a bow.
''Once-in-a-lifetime experience, especially going with Jimmy,'' Buehrle said Sunday. ''When we got out there, the guy said we could hunt separate. But my main thing is I wanted to be in the stand with Jim Thome. I turned down hunting by myself to be with him.''
And with nothing left to prove on the mound, Buehrle will be shut down for the rest of the regular season, skipping his scheduled Thursday start and finishing 10-9 with a 3.63 ERA in 201 innings -- not to mention his first no-hitter.
Now he can add a stuffed bear head and some bear claws to his trophy case.
''Yeah, he's done,'' manager Ozzie Guillen said after the game Sunday.
The Thursday start will go to rookie Lance Broadway, a September call-up along with Heath Phillips.
